Valarie Swain-Cade McCoullum is one of the most influential blacks at Penn. She made history when she was appointed to the position of Vice Provost of University Life. Her many duties include managing several offices, including my not limited to: academic , residential, and extracurricular services.
Her involvement over the past 30 years in the Vice Provost for University Life office has enhanced the Penn culture and black student experience. She created funds for multicultural events, helped create PENNCAP and the Upward Bound program at Penn. She also taught in the Graduate School of Education and the School of Social Work, and is a former Master of DuBois College House.
However, when she is not providing resources and delegating roles, you can find Val Cade in a dining hall, or walking around Locust Walk in the evenings wearing one of her unique hats and signature scarves.
