The Importance of Remembering

February 1, 2012

For the last three years, the Africana Studies Department has offered a course exploring the history of women and men of African descent at the University of Pennsylvania.  This course, AFRC-187, has sought to create an intellectual space where the particular experience and history of Blacks at Penn can intersect with the current journeys of our students, faculty, and staff.

One way that we have done this is by asking our students to work to uncover and articulate “Daily Black History Facts” during the month of February.  We hope you check back in over the next few weeks to read about individuals and organizations that you may or may not have heard of.  Knowing our history is tremendously important, as is affirming and giving thanks for those who worked, endured, and paved the way so that we could be here.

Best wishes for a strong Black History Month.

The Rev. Charles L. Howard, Ph.D.
University Chaplain, University of Pennsylvania
