Nnamdi Azikwe

February 27, 2010

Nnamdi Azikwe (1904-1996) born in Zungeru, Nigeria, attended Lincoln University, completing a BA and MA in political science prior to completing a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania. As a student at Penn, Azikwe met and corresponded with Marcus Garvey and other prominent Pan Africanists, a sentiment with which he returned to his home country. Azikwe was elected the first president of an independent Nigeria in 1963, but was unfortunately overthrown by a military coup in 1966. He went on to receive an honorary doctorate from Penn in 1980.
