Samuel White

February 11, 2010

Between the years of 1880 and 1894, Sam White (1845-1904) was the caretaker of the University of Pennsylvania athletic fields on 37th and Locust. He also maintained the training house on the southwest corner of the fields. An enormous man and skilled boxer and wrestler, White was well regarded for his training expertise amongst the varsity athletes, particularly for his skill as a masseuse. In addition, White’s strong voice led the cheering for Penn’s athletes in the glory days of early Penn athletics. He was affectionately known by students as “Sun” or “Black Sam.”
